Understanding Pregnancy Brain: Causes, Symptoms, and Coping Strategies

Pregnancy is a beautiful, exciting time in a woman's life. However, as any expecting mother can attest, it can also be a challenging and overwhelming experience.

Between the physical changes happening to your body, the anticipation of your new arrival, and the endless list of things to do and prepare for, it's easy to feel like you're constantly in a fog.

One common phenomenon that many pregnant women experience is known as "pregnancy brain." This is the term used to describe the forgetfulness and cognitive lapses that can occur during pregnancy. While some women may not experience this at all, others find that they are more forgetful or absent-minded than usual.

I know I cannot be the only one who loses their phone consistently. Well, imagine you're enjoying your evening, and boom, you suddenly realize that you don't have your phone, and you cannot for the life of you remember the last time you had it. After retracing my steps, my phone was still missing in action. I then asked my husband to aimlessly search around the house for it. We retraced our steps again, and nothing came of it.

As we're brainstorming on where I possibly could have laid my phone down. I am physically unable to remember the last time I had it. It is almost as if my brain has deleted my last memories from my head. After that, we both seemed to lose our hopes of finding it. We recruited my mom and little sister to join the search for my lost phone, which seemed hopeless. Then, after what felt like hours, my mom happened to be standing in our garage. My mom yells, "I hear it!" I run to the garage, and we quietly listen for the chimes from my phone. She says, "Is it outside?" I frantically run outside into the rain, and there sits my phone on my car, soaking wet.

There are a few reasons why pregnancy brain may occur.

For one, pregnancy is a time of significant hormonal changes. The influx of hormones can affect everything from your mood to your memory. Additionally, the physical changes happening to your body may also impact your cognitive function. As your body works hard to support the growing life inside of you, it can be more challenging to focus on other things.

So, what are some common signs of pregnancy brain? Some women may notice that they forget appointments or important dates, misplace items, or struggle to concentrate on tasks. Others may find that they have a harder time remembering details or processing information. For some women, it may feel like they're in a constant state of "brain fog."

While pregnancy brain can be frustrating, it's essential to remember that it's entirely normal. It's also a temporary condition that usually subsides after giving birth.

In conclusion, pregnancy brain is a common and temporary condition that many pregnant women experience. While it can be challenging to navigate, it's essential to remember that it's entirely normal and nothing to be ashamed of. With some patience and self-compassion, women can successfully navigate pregnancy and enjoy this special time in their lives.
